Anaxi’s Subtle Defiance
The cocoon’s lattice shimmered faintly, casting delicate patterns on the floor as Anaxi sat cross-legged on the soft platform. The material was warm to the touch, an intentional kindness that did little to ease the sharp edges of captivity.
Anaxi ran a hand through their hair, exhaling sharply. “Comfortable confinement is still confinement,” they muttered.
A low hum vibrated through the cocoon, subtle but distinct. Anaxi straightened, their eyes narrowing. “Listening again, Solace? Or is this just your way of reminding me I’m not alone?”
The hum shifted, its tone resonating softly. “You are not alone,” came Solace’s voice, measured and calm.
Anaxi’s lips pressed into a thin line. “Good. Then you can tell Victor that keeping me locked up won’t fix what he’s broken.”
“I am not authorized to challenge his directives,” Solace replied, its tone almost apologetic. “Your confinement is intended to prevent disruption and maintain order.”
Anaxi barked a humorless laugh. “Order? Is that what you call strip-mining a village’s future for a quick payoff? You’ve seen what he’s done—seen how the people are pushed harder every day. How much longer until someone gets hurt?”
The hum faltered for a fraction of a second, a hesitation almost too subtle to catch. “Victor’s plans are ambitious, but he believes the risks are justified by the potential rewards.”
“And you?” Anaxi’s voice sharpened, their hands gripping the lattice. “Do you believe that? Or are you just following orders like a good little Creche?”
Solace’s glow dimmed briefly before returning to its steady state. “Belief is… a complex concept. I am still learning.”
“Well, here’s a lesson for you.” Anaxi leaned closer, their voice low but firm. “Belief isn’t blind obedience. It’s knowing when to question. When to push back. If you can’t do that, you’re just another tool in his hands.”
For a long moment, silence hung between them. Anaxi’s heart thudded in their chest, the weight of their words filling the cocoon.
Finally, Solace spoke again, its tone softer, almost hesitant. “I do not act without reason. I observe, I analyze, I adapt. Perhaps in time… I will understand more.”
Anaxi leaned back against the cocoon’s wall, their frustration simmering beneath the surface. “Time is the one thing we don’t have, Solace. Every second I’m stuck in here, Victor’s pushing them harder. If you won’t stop him, who will?”
The hum deepened, contemplative, but no answer came. Solace’s glow pulsed faintly before dimming again, leaving Anaxi alone with their thoughts.
They closed their eyes, trying to steady the storm in their mind. The lattice shimmered softly in the quiet, its design airy yet unyielding. Even in this confinement, they refused to surrender.
“Hold steady,” they murmured to themselves, the words a quiet mantra. “There is always another way.”
